Tank wagons

Erciyas Rail builds five four-axle bogie tank wagons for liquid and gaseous cargo, from the 62 m³ Zaes for crude oil to the 117 m³ Zags for LPG. All are built for 1,435 mm standard gauge; RID compliance for dangerous goods is listed for the Zans 98, Zags 117, Zacens 78 and Zaes 62.

The Zags 117 has a spiral-welded tank, a method Erciyas Rail introduced to tank wagons in 2022 with its sister company Erciyas Steel Pipe. The spiral seam leaves no cross seams along the tank and reduces the number of T-joints to inspect by about 71%.

How the spiral-welded tank works

A conventional tank shell is made of rolled plate sections, each with a longitudinal seam, joined by circumferential seams; every crossing point is a T-joint. With spiral welding the shell is formed by one continuous helical seam. According to Erciyas Rail's engineering data this means about 71% fewer T-joints, 13% longer fatigue life under cyclic stress and 20 times faster tank production, with every seam inspected by ultrasound and X-ray.

Frequently asked questions

Which tank wagons does Erciyas Rail build?

Five models: Zans 98 m³ for mineral oil, Zags 117 m³ for LPG with a spiral-welded tank, Zacens 78 m³ for bitumen and heavy oil up to +190°C, Zas 70 m³ for light petroleum products such as diesel and gasoline, and Zaes 62 m³ for crude oil and heavy petroleum.

Which Erciyas Rail tank wagon carries LPG?

The Zags 117 m³. Its P460NL tank has the RID tank code P27BH, a maximum operating pressure of 27 bar and a working temperature range of -25°C to +40°C, on Y25Ls-K bogies.

Which tank wagons are heated?

The Zacens 78 has an external heating system rated 12 bar operating and 18 bar test pressure, with 100 mm rock wool insulation, for cargo up to +190°C. The Zaes 62 has a heating system for crude oil up to +165°C. Heating and insulation are optional on the Zas 70.

Who operates Erciyas Rail tank wagons?

Deliveries include 340 tank wagons for VTG between 2024 and 2026 and 250 tank wagons for Iraqi Republic Railways between 2021 and 2022.
